Despite loss, Spurs rookies shine in G League debut

With Dejounte Murray and DeMar DeRozan in Cedar Park Arena, the San Antonio Spurs rookie trio - Luka Samanic, Quinndary Weatherspoon and Keldon Johnson - made their G League debut for the Austin Spurs home-opener against the Rio Grande Vipers.

Led by Johnson's team-high 22 points and eight rebounds, Austin would lose their first game of the season, 120-112, to the Vipers.

Johnson would finish with 11-13 shooting, three assists, and two steals in 31 minutes.

Spurs' Luka Samanic would finish with a double-double (13 points and 10 rebounds) in 30 minutes while Weatherspoon had 14 points and six assists in 25 minutes in the Austin loss.

Spurs forward Chimezie Metu chipped in with 13 points and seven rebounds while Daulton Hommes added 15 points in 23 minutes off the bench.

Austin will face Rio Grande tonight for the second game of a back-to-back.
