The NBA 2K League off-season is over and teams are gearing up for the 2020 NBA 2K League Draft on Feb. 22. It will be a memorable day for the league prospects as they are just one step away from realizing their pro-gaming dreams.

But before that night, head coaches are hard at work ensuring they select the right fit for their team as season three nears.

Mavs Gaming head coach, L.T. Fairly, is well-aware of the task at hand. The second-year coach guided a young Mavs team last season to a 12-4 record (second-best in the league) and a berth in the 2019 playoffs.

Now Fairly will be looking to improve the team from last season and more as in this exclusive Q&A.

Jeff: With the off-season coming to a close, and the 2020 Draft is coming up. What are you and your staff doing ahead of the big night?

Fairly: We're just going through our routine, same routine we did last year. Looking at lot of Twitch film, a lot of scouting, and just getting ready to give the new players this upcoming season a nice Mavs Gaming welcome and fit into the family. So that's basically it on our end! Just going through our normal routine.

We're just going through a routine at this point. I'm giving it all and hoping to land the best two guys in the draft.

Jeff: What goes into the process for you for finding the next Mavs Gaming players?

Fairly: It's not anything crazy like rocket science, but it's basically normal. Watching Twitch film. A lot of scouting. A lot of the interview process to where we can somewhat accurately get a feel for what an individual may bring in.

You want to see if they somewhat fit. See what type of effort they are giving off overall. If anything, I think we just invest a lot of time in it to it.

Jeff: You mentioned Twitch a couple of times already. How important is that Twitch video that you look at?

Fairly: It's night and day! Definitely, if the individual has audio and things like that, we get a feel for how their communication is and things like that on the court.

But it's everything - Twitch right now. People putting themselves out there, and it serves to advise if coaches, like myself, want to bring an individual in. And so I think I spend more time watching Twitch than I do the normal cable and Netflix!

Jeff: What are a few things that you and your staff have been focusing on for next season?

Fairly: We're just trying to just progress.

Let's take some steps forward and achieve the ultimate goal - the championship. We are really focusing on just getting better every day and seeing where we land. So we're real confident over here. We'll definitely take some steps in the right direction this upcoming season.

Jeff: Mavs Gaming was a very young team last season. Now those rookies and young players have a solid season under their belts. What are you expecting from those younger players?

Fairly: I think, last year, everybody went through the phase of just figuring out what the 2K League is about. Once you get in there and get through the repetitions, a few games under your belt, you feel a lot more comfortable.

And I think this year, we're going to feel that comfort from game one. Those players will lean more towards the veteran side of things, so they know what to expect.

I done been with these guys. They done been with me for a year and know how we going to progress, and they know how we going to move as an organization.

Jeff: The big question now is draft night. Are you ready coach?

Fairly: (laughs) Honestly, yeah! We do a lot of preparation on our end. I think we dotted our I's and crossed our T's. So now, we're just looking to go through a couple more interviews at this point and just get a feel for the individuals we may bring in.

But, overall, we'll be fully prepped and where we need to be come draft night.
