A boat fire in Port St. Lucie is now being investigated by police as a possible arson case.
Around 2:30 a.m. on Tuesday, Port St. Lucie Police, St. Lucie County Fire Rescue and State Fire Marshals responded to a home on SW Hickock Terrace near SW Del Rio Boulevard in Port St. Lucie for reports of a boat fire.
When police and firefighters arrived, a 2001 26-foot Seapro and the attached motor were fully engulfed, police say. Firefighters were able to quickly put out the fire and fire marshals determined the fire was intentionally set.
Police say that during the investigation, a household member was woken up by someone pounding on the front door and being told their boat was on fire. Everyone was able to evacuate the home and there were no injuries, but the boat and one side of the house did suffer extensive damage.
A surveillance video was reviewed by police that shows a small light-colored sedan drive up to the neighbor's property and a person is seen exiting the vehicle and then the boat was seen on fire, according to the Port St. Lucie Police. The person is seen getting back into the car and leaving the area.
Police say the homeowner later informed them that, as the family was preparing for Hurricane Dorian, an argument broke out between him and a man over speeding in the neighborhood and that the car seen in the surveillance video matches the type of car the man was driving.
Police are actively investigating the case and ask anyone with information to contact the Treasure Coast Crime Stoppers at 800-273-(TIPS) 8477.
