Mother's Day is Sunday, celebrating those special women in our lives. From mom to mom, CBS Austin's Allison Miller shows us how local women are making a difference. The Mother's Milk Bank at Austin is the largest in the country. They collect donated breast milk and give it to babies in need. We met one mom who's son received the donor milk, now Haley Rose is helping other mammas and their babies.
The Mothers' Milk Bank at Austin is nearly 19 years old, and is the largest milk bank in the country. In those 19 years, generous milk and financial donors have made it possible to dispense more than 5 million ounces of milk to save babies born so early that they fit in your hand. Now serving 130 hospitals in 22 states, and nearly 100 babies in homes annually, we are in need of 1,500 milk donors this year to meet the need. Every healthy lactating mom with a baby under one year of age should consider becoming a milk donor - call today (512-494-0800), or sign up at milkbank.org. 60,000 babies are born in the US each year weighing less than 3 1/2 pounds. As little as one ounce of donor human milk per day is life-saving for them .
