SAN ANTONIO - Physical Education coaches are getting creative with virtual learning, while also getting kids moving with dance!

Rachel Kaufman, P.E. Coach at Fox Run Elementary is helping the kids to move and groove both on campus and at home, and she doesn't miss a beat.

“We did the jump dance, it’s one of my favorites. The kids had a ton of fun so it was a great time,” she said.

Kaufman has been a P.E. coach at Fox Run Elementary for one year and previously worked at both Encino Park Elementary School and Tuscany Heights Elementary.

The dance moves are part of the fun in Kaufman’s P.E. class, which she teaches virtually alongside coaching partner, Jason Sellers, who leads the in-person class.

“I know that the kids are getting a lot of screen time at home and so the excitement that they show when they come to P.E., it’s amazing,” Kaufman said.

In addition to the dancing, the coaches give students 'fit tips' every week to encourage healthy habits. They also start each day with a social emotional wellness check-in.

“We have taught the kids different strategies to use maybe if they’re upset or angry or sad so we ask them to use those strategies if they are not feeling like a 4 or 5,” she explained.

And the kids do love to dance!

“We’re showing them that this doesn’t have to be just exercise or working out. We have fun ways to create those healthy habits and hopefully maintain them and teach them that they can keep those habits going throughout their lives,” Kaufman said.

Coach Kaufman said she loves to see how engaged and connected the students are, even from behind their screens.

“My favorite part about Zooming with these kids is watching the grid and seeing everybody in sync, moving, dancing and exercising,” Kaufman added.

That passion to keep kids active while having fun stems from her own positive experience in school.

“I am a product of NEISD; I went to Huebner, Eisenhower and Churchill. I can tell you that I remember elementary P.E. better than any other part of my younger years,” she recalls.

Kaufman said can’t imagine doing anything else.

“I can honestly tell you it’s the best decision I ever made.”
